David started school again this semster. He has just a little bit more to do and he will get his bachelor's. He is going to UVU and he only has a certain period of time to finish it, otherwise he would have to start all over again. Yeah, let's not do that.
So, I mentioned that because David goes to school on Thursday nights and Saturday mornings until the afternoon.
This Saturday after he got home, we headed to the Murray City Pool. I had never been there before and Braxton hadn't either - but it was extremely fun. Braxton could not get enough of the "purple" slide. It was great.
Ayla had her friend, Grace, with her. For some reason I failed to get any pics of them :( But they were there...

This picture was taken quite a while ago. So, he looks quite a bit older. He was such a character and fun to be around.
He was one of the first converts to the church that became a general authority. I guess I just think that all of the men who are high up in the church, have been members all of their lives. So, it really makes me stop and think how Heavenly Father doesn't care where you came from or what you did as long as you are headed in the right direction.
There are a few things he shared with us, that I wanted to share with you:
He said that he grew up in a religious family but always had a hard time believing that the Father, Son and Holy Ghost were one person. He was always looking for "the truth." Even though he came from a religious background, his father was a farmer and had a very colorful mouth. He picked that little trait up himself. He now hasn't uttered a swearword in 42 years! His example was when he smashed his finger with a hammer -- he said, shouting, "Ohhhh, that hurts!" worked just as well as getting the Lord involved. He said "Why get the Lord involved in your stupidity?" I just loved that!
He started serving in the Navy in 1943 and in 1950 became a Naval Aviator for the Korean War. He literally lit up speaking of his past job. You could tell that he truly loved what he did. His job was to bomb bridges and railroads so that freight couldn't get to where it needed to go. So, he had to keep watch over the areas that had previously been hit to make sure they weren't repairing it. If they were, he was to bomb them again.
Well, one time, he noticed a small shack and smoke coming from the chimney. It was close to an area that they didn't want repairing, so, he was to bomb the shack. Now, he wasn't a member at this time... Right as he was about to line up his plane to drop the bomb, he said that he saw a very vivid picture (in his scope) of a mother holding her baby. He knew that it wasn't possible to clearly see that from the distance that he was, but knew he had been given that "vision" if you will to let him know who was in that shack. He immediately turned off his bombs and backed off his target.
I of course started to cry... Then he said something to the fact of, "Yeah, that wouldn't have been very good. But we'll see what kind of things are played for you on the big screen when it's your judgement day." It was so funny.
He then went on to talk about missionary work. He kept saying over and over, "Anything can work - if YOU do." It's SO true. As long as you are putting forth the effort, things will work out. Heavenly Father will bless you!
The other story that I wanted to share with you is funny if you know church history. Elder Rector and his wife wrote 4 books about new members and their conversion stories. His and hers included.
Well, in the book, he wrote that God loves His children all equally - whether they are Baptist, Christian, Methodist ... etc. Elder Bruce R. McConkie was one of the people to go through the book before it was published and put a line through that sentence and wrote to the side - God loves those who keep his commandments! Elder Rector crossed through that line and wrote 4 or 5 scriptures to the side. It was returned back to him with the scriptures crossed through and about 50 other scriptures written to the side. So, needless to say, Elder Rector ended up keeping that sentence out of the book.
Well, years later Elder Rector and Elder Hinckley (wasn't President at the time - but I do believe he was in the First Presidency. However, he referred to him as "Elder") were working on something together. Elder Hinckley was thanking Elder Rector and said, "if there is anything I can do for you, you let me know." Elder Rector said, "Actually, you can answer this question for me: Do you think God loves all of his children equally, whether they are Baptist, Christian, Methodist...etc.?" Elder Hinckley answered, "Well, of course he does!" Elder Rector than said, "Well, would you mind telling that to Bruce for me?" Elder Hinckley than said, "Nooo way! I'm not getting in the middle of that. If you want him to be told that, it is going to have to be told by YOU." LOL.
The reason he had brought up that story was we sang, "I believe in Christ" to open up the fireside which was written by Bruce R. McConkie.
There is a ton more things that I wanted to share -- but this is what I get for waiting two days to write it down! My memory isn't doing so hot with this pregnancy..... {ruff!}
Anyway ... just a fun weekend - wrapped up with the spirit, too. What more could a girl ask for?
Umm, first of all, you look GOOD for being 4 months along in your second pregnancy, my little Maria friend! Shoot!
ReplyDeleteAlso...I guess I wasn't aware that Hartman Rector was still alive...but I've got a few of his quotes in my quote journal, and he's got some good stuff! I'm jealous that you got to hear him speak! Thanks for sharing!
